Review:

The story revolves in the life of a village leader named Okonkwo who wants to prove his worth. But his intentions brought suffering to himself and his entire community. It depicts on how life can be changed in just a flick. I loved the story simply because it connotes our vulnerability as a human being and how people could affect our lives both in many ways.

Overview:

It’s the 21st century, but the gods of Mount Olympus and assorted monsters have walked out of the pages of high school student Percy Jackson’s Greek mythology texts and into his life. And they’re not happy: Zeus’ lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect. Even more troubling is the sudden disappearance of Percy’s mother. As Percy finds himself caught between angry and battling gods, he and his friends embark on a cross-country adventure to catch the true lightning thief, save Percy’s mom, and unravel a mystery more powerful than the gods themselves.

Review:

I’m a bit disappointed with the film. Actually, I managed to read the book weeks before the movie came out. Whilst reading, I can its similarity with J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. Instead of bearded wizards waving their magic wands, there’s Zeus, minotaurs, satyrs and whatnot. The movie is quite fast paced and if you enjoyed reading the book, you’ll be disappointed as I am. Somehow I regret reading the book first before the movie. The perspective is totally different.

For me, it’s just another teen oriented fantasy story.

Inglourious Basterds (2009)

Genre: Action

Overview:

Inglourious Basterds is a 2009 war film written and directed by Quentin Tarantino and starring Brad Pitt, Christoph Waltz, Eli Roth, Diane KrugerMélanie Laurent. The film tells the story of two plots to assassinate the Nazi Germany political leadership, one planned by a young French Jewish cinema proprietor (Laurent), and the other by a team of Jewish Allied soldiers led by Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Pitt).

Review:

I love most of Tarantino’s film. This is by far one of his great products after SinCity. It is divided into different chapters. The first part might bore you if you don’t understand the psychology of the dialog. I pay high regards for Denis Menochet’s acting on this film – I hated how good he portrayed his character because it was simply awesome. This is a thrill ride. Trust me! Tarantino also put a killer ending on the film, he literally changed history.

Rating:

MOVIE WATCH OF THE WEEK

Overview:

The Beast and the Beauty (Yasuwa minyeo) is a 2005 South Korean romantic-comedy film. It involves voice-actor Dong-gun (Ryu Seung-beom), whose blind girlfriend Hae-ju (Shin Min-a) suddenly receives surgery to regain her eyesight. Having lied to Hae-ju about his appearance, the beastly Dong-gun chooses to undergo extreme measures to change his appearance, while promising Hae-ju that he will return soon. Meanwhile, Hae-ju bumps into the Joon-ha (Kim Kang-woo)—Dong-gun’s high school friend whose appearance is how Dong-gun described himself to Hae-ju—and mistakes him for Dong-gun. Hilarity ensues, and Dong-gun finds himself struggling to hold onto the love of the woman he loves.

Review:

The movie made me cry. The movie doesn’t have too much twist but it is totally packed with comedy. It presents the human nature of wanting to please other people. Love is blind.

Rating:

8 out of 10 – (Go watch this if you want to escape from the typical romantic movies)

It is clear that we have become reliant on technology. It has affected the lives of the greater population, influencing our preferences and quality of living. One of the biggest contributors to this technology explosion fiasco would be television or the glowing tube inside every household.

It made us sacrifice our time, leisure, passion and even our personal relationships with other people. We spend a huge amount of time everyday affront the silver screen without realizing the ill effects it does to us. Subtly, it has an enormous effect on the way we communicate with other people.

DISINTEREST

Television provides fast and comprehensive information. Unlike the huge time and effort we invest on talking, listening and reading, the visual media does all the effort for us with its colorful graphics and frame by frame materials.

LACK OF CONCENTRATION

While the television is on, it competes for our attention with homework, phone calls, cooking a meal and doing other household chores. We learned to listen with half an ear. It taught us that it is plainly normal to listen for just a little amount of time and checking what’s on, instead of making us concentrate and focus more on the details.

THE POWER OF CLICKING

Whenever a show bores or disinterests us, we demonstrate our freedom to change the channel with just one flick of a finger. This would strongly affect our communication with others in a sense that whenever someone is talking about a certain topic, we would likely tune them off or just pretend to be listening instead of engaging in a sensible communication with them.

TREND SETTING

Commercials, MTV’s and Lifestyle shows depict a preset unique vision with universally accepted perceptions. These images suggest that our own ideas and preferences are not satisfactory in the public eye. It somehow lurks the idea that there should be oneness in thinking and it fits the greater population better. This consequently affects our freedom to discover new ideas and voice out our own personal preferences towards other people in society.

In the long run, it will still be our own prerogative if we will let television affect us or not.
